Practice what you preach
We have all been there.
We have all gotten into little spats with family, friends, and colleagues. We’re human, and disagreements are part of that.
And I am no different. I admit that I have even disagreed with another Holding Tank member. Someone that I have a rich and congenial history with.
Why?
Because people argue. People disagree, and when they do, it doesn’t mean anything personal. However, there is a lesson here—one that is crucial to your ongoing success.
We’ll explore the art of communication and its implications for your practice in depth here. The goal is to help you become more accountable and prepared. Get this recipe right, and you’ll thrive.
There is an important lesson here
A quick online search will uncover plenty of scientific theories about argument-related strategies. Arguments are a natural, important part of relationships.
Arguing is and will always be a defining quality of humanity, and if you’re going to put yourself out there, I have nothing but respect for you.
However, there is one key lesson I want you to take away.
When you decide to argue, you must be prepared for disagreement. If you are willing to create an argument, you MUST stand your ground—do not waiver. You cannot begin a disagreement and then accept that what you are saying is wrong or that it is being taken out of context.
So, before you speak, make sure you are confident in what you’re saying and that your words have merit.
This lesson is imperative as you learn to be a more effective communicator.
Communication is key—take ownership
I want you to remember that you must take responsibility as soon as you open up the opportunity to argue. How you communicate is up to you.
Your audience is not responsible for the way YOU communicate. That burden is on you. So, be purposeful with what you say and confident in your stance.
As a doctor, your patient is not responsible for how YOU communicate. Again, that is on you. Do not take that lightly. Understand what that means and the importance of ownership.
Practice what you preach. Your words matter, so stand your ground and use every moment as a learning opportunity.
I am ready to be challenged. Are you?
I firmly believe in the power of words and practicing what you preach.
At CloseForChiro, we are ready for anyone willing to challenge our position. They are entitled to that, and we welcome it because we are confident in our ability to disagree productively.
For example, a PT started gaslighting me on Instagram. Instead of ignoring him or allowing him to hold a one-sided argument, I engaged. I challenged him to a live debate. He accepted, and the results were incredibly positive.
Remember this…
The key is to hold your position. Once you begin to waiver, you lose credibility. Go into an argument with a clear stance and hold it.
Just remember, it is not personal. Taking this into consideration is more important these days than ever, particularly with the growing disparity of politics.
Yes, I did make fun of someone’s post. I am an audience member who was in a disagreement, and I poked at the CONTENT, not the individual who posted it. There is a significant difference. Taking this action was my right, and it was handled well. We respected the argument for what it was and moved on.
There are lessons to be learned from our public outlets
We encourage everyone to actively follow along on our public social outlets.
Why?
Because there are valuable lessons to be learned. How we publicly handle disagreements, mean tweets, and downright rudeness is something you can implement into your life.
EVERYTHING offers a learning moment for those who pay attention.
That is why I encourage everyone to watch me outside of the Holding Tank or on our private facebook groups such as “the Closers Club” on social media. Everything I do is with intent. I approach situations with the purpose of expanding my ideas. The goal is always to encourage growth and abundance in the profession for which I have so much respect.
Sometimes, that is a little messy, and that’s okay.
